Health and Safety Policy — Gardener Brimsdown
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the commitments of Gardener Brimsdown to provide safe gardening services and to protect the health, safety and welfare of staff, clients and the public across our service area. The policy applies to routine garden maintenance, landscaping, hedge cutting, tree care and any additional grounds work provided by the Brimsdown gardener team. Our approach is to prevent harm through training, planning and the use of safe systems of work.Gardening Brimsdown accepts that health and safety management is integral to quality service delivery and business sustainability. We will allocate resources to ensure compliance with good practice and to reduce risk to as low as reasonably practicable. All members of the Gardener Brimsdown team have a role to play; managers must lead by example, supervisors must monitor activities, and operatives must follow safe working procedures and report hazards without delay.
This policy applies to work on client properties, public spaces and when operating from our depots. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure adequate systems are in place, and of employees to carry out tasks safely. Key objectives include injury prevention, safe use of machinery and tools, correct handling of materials, and control of hazardous substances. We aim to maintain a healthy workforce so that we deliver reliable Brimsdown gardening services.
Responsibilities and Organisation
The organisational structure for health and safety at Gardener Brimsdown is clear and proportionate. Senior management holds overall responsibility for policy implementation; site supervisors ensure day-to-day compliance; and operatives follow instructions and report problems. Roles are documented so that everyone knows who to approach with concerns and where responsibilities lie. The policy is supported by written procedures and inductions for new staff and temporary workers.Specific duties include risk assessment completion, safe plant operation, maintenance scheduling and PPE provision. The following list summarises principal duties for the team:
- Carry out dynamic and formal risk assessments before work begins;
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment and maintain it;
- Operate machinery only if trained and authorised;
- Report accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions promptly.
Training, competence and supervision are critical. Gardener Brimsdown provides induction training for new recruits, on-the-job coaching, and refresher sessions for safe tool use, manual handling and working at height when required. Competence assessments are recorded so we can demonstrate that staff delivering Brimsdown gardening services are competent to undertake tasks safely.
Risk assessment and method statements underpin how we work. Before any job, a site-specific risk assessment identifies hazards such as buried services, uneven ground, overhead lines, traffic or public access. Control measures are applied and documented. Safe systems of work and toolbox talks ensure that risks are communicated and understood by all team members, whether on a domestic garden or a communal green space.
Equipment and vehicle maintenance is essential for safety. All powered tools, ride-on mowers and transport vehicles are serviced at scheduled intervals and inspected before use. Damaged equipment is taken out of service and reported. The use of fuel, lubricants and pesticides is controlled; materials are stored securely and disposed of responsibly, following manufacturers’ guidance.
Personal Protective Equipment and Hazard Controls
PPE is provided where hazards cannot be eliminated. Items include protective gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, hi-vis clothing and safety footwear. Operatives must wear PPE appropriate to task risks. Controls for hazardous substances follow a precautionary approach: substitution where possible, minimised quantities, safe storage and clear labeling. Employees are trained in safe handling and spill response procedures.
Emergency planning and first aid are in place for all operations. First aid kits and trained first aiders are available on sites and on vehicles. Emergency procedures cover serious injury, fire, chemical spill and vehicle incidents. Incidents are recorded, investigated and learning is shared to prevent recurrence. We maintain records of accidents and review trends to improve our safe working arrangements.
Communication and client liaison are essential when working on third-party sites. The Brimsdown gardening team will coordinate with property owners and contractors to ensure clear boundaries, exclusion zones and pedestrian safety measures. Subcontractors and temporary staff are asked to follow our health and safety expectations and must demonstrate equivalent standards before being engaged.
Monitoring, review and continuous improvement are embedded in our approach. This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed annually or after significant incidents or operational changes. Internal audits and site inspections identify opportunities for improvement, and corrective actions are tracked to completion. Gardener Brimsdown is committed to a proactive safety culture and will update practices in line with industry developments and feedback from our workforce.
All employees and representatives of the Brimsdown gardener service are required to read and comply with this policy. Non-compliance will be addressed through supervision and, where necessary, disciplinary action. We encourage everyone to speak up about hazards and to contribute suggestions for safer ways of working.
In delivering landscaping, maintenance and care across our service area, Gardener Brimsdown always balances productivity with safety. The policy prioritises prevention, training and the wellbeing of our staff and the communities we serve. By following these commitments, we aim to provide consistently safe, professional gardening services.
This policy is authorised by management and represents our company-wide commitment to health, safety and welfare. It will be kept under review and updated to reflect changing operations, new equipment or improved working practices.
